MicroTrainer – CAN Basics Training Kit

Introducing the world’s smallest Simulated CAN Bus Trainer for Multimeter Diagnostics. While this is NOT a live CAN bus system, the Micro Trainer CAN Basic produces static DC voltage levels that simulate what a digital multimeter reads on an active CAN bus. You will not see toggling CAN frames on an oscilloscope – this board is purpose-built for teaching multimeter-based CAN bus diagnostics, the first step in any roadside or flightline troubleshooting workflow. But it will give your students a safe, battery-powered circuit board to practice the voltage and resistance measurements used to diagnose CAN bus faults – without needing a vehicle, aircraft, or expensive bench equipment. Students learn to identify normal bus voltages, correct termination resistance, and five common fault conditions using only a standard multimeter.

Each classroom kit includes 24 trainers in a Milwaukee PACKOUT case with custom-cut foam inserts for secure storage and transport.

Product Details

  • Realistic CAN bus voltages – CAN_H reads ~2.7V, CAN_L reads ~2.2V, differential ~0.5V (matches real-world multimeter-averaged values)
  • 5 fault injection switches – CAN_H shorted to ground, CAN_L shorted to ground, CAN_H-CAN_L short, open bus segment, and incorrect termination (60 ohm vs 120 ohm)
  • LED status indicators – Green/red module status LEDs for ECM, TCM, and BCM, plus COMM DEGRADED and NO COMM indicators show students the system-level impact of each fault
  • 11 labeled test points – Large pads sized for multimeter probe tips, clearly marked with expected readings
  • Battery powered – Single CR2032 coin cell, no external power needed. Low-battery LED warns when replacement is needed
  • Compact and portable – Flat SMD construction, fits in a tool bag or classroom kit

Designed For

  • Automotive and aviation maintenance training programs
  • Trade schools and community college electronics courses
  • Self-study for ASE, A&P, or military MOS certification prep

What Students Will Measure

Measurement Normal Reading
CAN_H to GND ~2.7V
CAN_L to GND ~2.2V
CAN_H – CAN_L (differential) ~0.5V
Termination resistance (correct) 60 ohm
Termination resistance (fault) 120 ohm

Interactive CAN Diagnostic Simulator

A free browser-based demo that mirrors this board. Pick any of the five faults and see exactly what a multimeter would show you, measurement by measurement.

  • Watch the live waveform and the averaged meter readings side by side
  • See where the leads go for every reading, and why the differential is measured across the pair instead of to ground
  • Flip the key between on and off to see why voltage and resistance are never measured at the same time
  • Compare each reading against its known-good value, with out-of-spec readings flagged

How to use offline: Use the download button on that page to save the demo as a single HTML file. Double-click it to open in any browser — no internet needed.

What’s Included

  • Micro Trainer CAN Basic PCB (fully assembled and tested)
  • CR2032 battery (installed)

Multimeter not included. Any standard digital multimeter with DC voltage and resistance modes will work.
